What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest?

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a medical emergency where the heart suddenly stops pumping blood effectively around the body.

It can happen unexpectedly to anyone, anywhere and at any time.

When someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, every second counts. Immediate CPR can help maintain blood flow to the brain and other vital organs, while early use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) may provide the opportunity to restore a normal heart rhythm.

Knowing what to do — and having access to the right equipment — can make a critical difference.

Shocktober: Remember 3 Simple Steps

If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, remember:

📞 CALL

Call Triple Zero (000) immediately and request an ambulance.

Follow the instructions provided by the emergency call taker and send someone to retrieve the nearest AED if one is available.

❤️ PUSH

Start CPR immediately.

Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest and continue CPR until emergency services take over, the person begins responding normally, or you are unable to continue.

If there are other people available, share the CPR workload to help maintain effective compressions.

⚡ SHOCK

Get an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and use it as soon as possible.

Turn the AED on and follow its voice and visual instructions.

Modern AEDs are designed to guide the responder through the process. The device will analyse the person’s heart rhythm and only advise or deliver a shock when appropriate.

You don’t need to be a healthcare professional to use an AED.

Is Your Workplace Prepared?

Ask yourself:

Does our team know CPR?

Do we have an AED readily accessible?

Does everyone know where the AED is located?

Are the AED battery and electrode pads within their expiry dates?

Is the AED clearly visible and appropriately signed?

Would our team feel confident responding to a Sudden Cardiac Arrest?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, now is a good time to take action.
