First Aid Accident & Emergency are proud to support local charities and events and we were proud to support the CONDEV Cares Charity Ride on the weekend. Condev employees, along with Matt Rogers, Ex NRL and Wallabies legend, Robbie McEven, Nic Gates and ex Tour de France riders rode 120km from Byron Bay to the Gold Coast on 7 September 2018 to support the Currumbin Special School. In particular, the event raised funds to purchase special needs bikes and equipment for the students within the school.
Our director, Scott Whimpey, decided to donate a defibrillator, first aid kits and services for the day to help the Condev team. This turned out to be very fortunate, as the first aid kit ended up being put to good use!
“We hoped the ride would be event free, but there was an incident with a cyclist coming off at speed and nearly having a critical injury,” Scott says. “It was good fortune I was available to render first aid and assess the patient. The cyclist suffered head injuries and abrasions from the crash.”
The cyclist hit a stick on a descent and the stick jammed the front wheel, causing the rider to be catapulted over the handlebars and landing on their head. The helmet was the only thing that saved the impact that could have been a
lot more serious if they were not protected.
“It’s so important to wear a helmet,” Scott continues. “This sort of impact can result in serious head injury or death. In this case the rider was very lucky, only having a mild bump on the head and a few layers of bark off.”
