What’s best? An express first aid course or a full-day course
If you need to renew your first aid certificate, but don’t know whether to choose express or standard, let’s talk it through.
At First Aid Accident and Emergency, we offer express and standard first aid courses on the Gold Coast. One gets you out of the classroom much sooner. The other keeps everything together in one full day.
But, is there a catch with the shorter option? And are you actually learning the same thing?
The truth is, both options can lead to the same nationally recognised first aid units; however, the difference is really how and when you complete the learning.
At First Aid Accident & Emergency on the Gold Coast, our express first aid course combines online learning at home with a shorter practical session in class, while the standard first aid course completes the learning and assessment face-to-face.
Here’s how to work out which one is right for you.
What is an express first aid course?
With our Gold Coast express first aid course, you’re splitting your first aid training into two parts.
Before coming into class, you’ll complete the theory component online. This includes videos and multiple-choice questions and generally takes around 2.5 hours to complete. You can work through it on your own device and at a time that suits you.
Then you’ll attend a 3.5-hour face-to-face session where the focus moves to practical skills, scenarios and assessments.
If you’re thinking you don’t have a whole day to spare for first aid training, this course is perfect.
It’s also great if you’re renewing your first aid certificate and are already familiar with much of the theory. Instead of spending the entire day in a classroom, you can get the online component done when it works for you and reduce the amount of time you need on the actual training day.
Does ‘express’ mean you skip the practical part?
No, definitely not. You won’t be just sitting at home answering a few questions; this course includes practical skills you need to demonstrate in person.
First aid training includes hands-on assessment in areas such as CPR, using an AED, responding to an unconscious casualty and managing common first aid emergencies.
Yes, some of the learning can happen online, but the practical side is still essential. The express format just moves the theory out of the classroom, so your face-to-face time is shorter.
Why choose our standard first aid course?
For some people, having everything taught in a classroom is easier.
Our standard Gold Coast first aid course runs for around seven hours and doesn’t require you to complete online learning beforehand. The training and assessments are completed as part of the face-to-face course.
This is great if it’s your first aid course, and especially good for people who prefer learning directly from an instructor.
The standard course isn’t necessarily “better” because it takes longer. It’s just a different way of learning.

What’s included and how much does it cost?
Whichever option you choose, both the express and standard first aid courses include HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and HLTAID009 Provide CPR.
You’ll learn practical first aid skills, including CPR for adults and infants, using an AED (defibrillator), responding to choking and unconscious casualties, and managing common injuries and medical emergencies.
The express first aid course is currently $99 and includes CPR. You’ll complete approximately 2.5 hours of online learning before attending a 3.5-hour face-to-face practical session.
Prefer to do everything in person? The standard first aid course is also available for $99, including CPR, with approximately seven hours of face-to-face training and no online learning required.
Course fees include your learning materials, a CPR face shield key ring and an electronic Statement of Attainment following successful completion of the required assessments and other certification requirements.
Which first aid course should you choose?
Still can’t decide? We recommend thinking about how you learn and what your schedule looks like. If you’ve completed first aid training before, are comfortable learning online and want to minimise the amount of time you spend in class, the express first aid course will probably be the best option for you.
If you’re completing first aid for the first time, prefer face-to-face learning or want to arrive and complete everything as part of one complete session, the standard first aid course may suit you better.
Either way, you’re not choosing between “proper” first aid training and a shortcut. You’re choosing the delivery format that works for you.
