The Future of Anaphylaxis Treatment Has Arrived: Meet Neffy® – Australia’s First Needle-Free Adrenaline Nasal Spray

neffy anaphylaxis

For decades, Australians living with severe allergies have relied on adrenaline auto-injectors, such as the EpiPen®, to treat life-threatening anaphylaxis. While these devices have saved countless lives, many people—particularly children and those with needle anxiety—delay or avoid using them during an emergency.

Now there’s an exciting new option.

Neffy®, Australia’s first needle-free adrenaline nasal spray, has been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for the emergency treatment of anaphylaxis. This innovative device delivers adrenaline through a simple nasal spray, providing a fast, effective and less invasive alternative to traditional injection devices. Clinical studies have shown that

Neffy provides adrenaline absorption comparable to intramuscular injection, making it a valuable new treatment option for eligible patients.

What is anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can occur within minutes of exposure to an allergen such as:

  • Peanuts and tree nuts
  • Shellfish and seafood
  • Eggs and dairy
  • Insect stings
  • Certain medications
  • Latex

Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat, wheezing, dizziness, collapse and loss of consciousness. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment with adrenaline followed by calling 000.

How does Neffy work?

Neffy contains adrenaline (epinephrine) in a single-use nasal spray device.

Simply:

  • Remove the device from its packaging.
  • Place the nozzle into one nostril.
  • Press the plunger firmly.
  • Call 000 immediately.

If symptoms do not improve after approximately five minutes, a second dose should be administered using a new device if available, following your healthcare professional’s advice.

Why Neffy is a game changer

The biggest advantage of Neffy is simple—it removes the needle. The benefits include:

  • ✔ Needle-free administration
  • ✔ Easy to carry and lightweight
  • ✔ Simple to use for parents, carers, teachers and workplaces
  • ✔ May improve confidence for people reluctant to use injections
  • ✔ Suitable for adults and children who meet approved weight requirements

For many families, reducing the fear associated with injections could encourage earlier administration of adrenaline—something that is critical during an anaphylactic emergency.

Does this replace an EpiPen?

Not necessarily. Neffy provides an additional treatment option, but it may not be appropriate for everyone. Your doctor or allergy specialist will determine which adrenaline device best suits your medical history, age and weight. Regardless of the device used:

  • Always administer adrenaline at the first signs of anaphylaxis.
  • Call 000 immediately.
  • Seek urgent medical assessment even if symptoms improve.

Education remains the most important step
