Why Every Sporting Club Needs an AED

Defibrillator Saves 14 yr old

A young 14-year-old athlete’s life was saved thanks to the quick actions of his mates around him and the availability of a defibrillator (AED).

A 14-year-old boy suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while at training at the Slack Creek tigers soccer club. What began as a normal training session quickly turned into a life-threatening emergency.

Fortunately, his mates, all aged under 15, recognised that something was seriously wrong. They immediately called emergency services, began CPR and retrieved a nearby defibrillator. The AED delivered the shocks needed to restore the teenager’s heart rhythm, ultimately helping to save his life.

This incident highlights an important reality; sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, regardless of age, fitness level, or health status. Many people incorrectly assume heart-related emergencies only affect older adults. The truth is that sudden cardiac arrest can strike children, teenagers, athletes, and otherwise healthy individuals without warning.

When sudden cardiac arrest occurs, every minute counts. Survival rates can decrease significantly with each minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation. Having a defibrillator on-site and people trained in CPR can make the difference between life and death.

Sporting clubs, schools, community organisations, workplaces, and public venues should all consider whether they are prepared for a cardiac emergency. An AED is designed to be used by everyday people and provides clear voice prompts to guide rescuers through the process.

The truth is, preparedness saves lives. Access to a defibrillator, combined with basic CPR knowledge and a rapid emergency response, gave this young athlete a second chance at life.

At First Aid Accident & Emergency, we are passionate about helping organisations create safer communities through CPR training and access to life-saving defibrillators. Every club should have a plan, every coach should know CPR, and every sporting venue should have a readily accessible AED.

Because when sudden cardiac arrest strikes, you don’t get a second chance to be prepared.
