TOURNIQUET (CAT)
The Combat Application Tourniquet CAT is small and lightweight device that completely occludes blood flow in an extremity. Used for the treatment of life-threatening bleeding, the C.A.T uses a Self-Adhering Band and a Friction Adaptor Buckle to fit a wide range of extremities combined with a one-handed windlass system.
Tourniquet use as recommended by the Australian Resuscitation Council.
The windlass uses a free moving internal band to provide true circumferential pressure to an extremity. The windlass is then locked in place; this requires only one hand, with the Windlass Clip.
- Arterial tourniquets should only be used for life-threatening bleeding from a limb, where the bleeding cannot be controlled by direct pressure. Ideally, a tourniquet should not be applied over a joint or wound, and must not be covered up by any bandage or clothing.
- Commercially manufactured devices such as those based on military designs are more effective than improvised tourniquets1. An example of a military tourniquet is shown in the pic beside. Effective use of commercial tourniquets is optimal when first aid providers are trained in proper application techniques. see our training course here.
